According to story, in the dry season, fresh water was became exhausted. So rice field, vegetables was died, locals life was so hard. In this time, a leader of the regions had one idea to handle problem. He gathered all people of this region to dig a pond for storing fresh water source for dry season. Immediately he made a pond-digging contest between a group of men and a group of women in the village, whichever side finished with a larger and deeper pond or shorter time would win with the rude that within the period of one night, starting at dusk and ending when the Morning Star appears in the East.
When the dark came, the two teams started their work. The male team dug the round pond in the west while the female team dug the square pond in the east. The female team was led by Lady Om. At the middle night, Lady Om cut a long tree to hang a lantern on and then put on the East. Regarding to the rules, when the male team saw the lantern and though that Morning Star had come. They stopped their works and came back their home to rest. At the same time, female team had continued to dig pond when sun risen. Finally, they finished their work and became the winner in the contest. Since then, the pond has been named “Ba Om” to appreciate the talent woman.
There is another legend that, ngo om (a species of spicy herb) grew around the pond, which is called Ao Ngo Om (Ngo Om pond). Then people in region was gradually acquainted with name of Ao Ba Om. In addition, many legends about the Ao Ba Om and Tra Vinh region were formed.
Near the Ba Om Pond, Ang temple is also the best location to visit in Tra Vinh, in the Khmer language is Angkorajaborey with the age of a million of year ago. This is one of the oldest temples in Tra Vinh, represents the unique architecture of the Khmer temple system and place Khmer people to gather to meet. Regarding to legend, the temple was constructed by bamboo trees and leaves in 990 so then restored by precious wood, tile roof, laterite wall in 1842. Although it’s has been restored by some times up to now, the temple has maintained the unique of characteristics of Khmer temple in Mekong Delta.
